Sleep in a Real Alaska Railcar

Our train car, turned into a guest suite, isn’t a replica.

Our train car, turned into two guest suites, isn’t a replica. It’s an authentic, retired Alaska Railroad passenger car that’s been lovingly restored and reimagined into two rental cabin units in Questa Woods, Seward. At Cherrywood Lane Getaway, you’re not just booking a place to sleep. You’re stepping into a cozy, heated, hand-finished piece of Alaska’s history.

Each unit features original detailing blended with modern comforts like a full bathroom, kitchenette, and private entrance, offering a rare lodging experience that combines craftsmanship, nostalgia, and character. Nestled among trees with views of mountains and sky, these one-of-a-kind stays are conversation starters and memory makers, unlike any other rental cabins in Seward, Alaska.

From Rust to Revival: The Restoration Story

The journey of a vintage WWII railcar to Cherrywood Lane in Seward, Alaska, is a fascinating tale of reuse, vision, and local character. Originally built in 1945 to transport troops, the railcars were later repurposed by the Alaska Railroad for maintenance operations. After decades of service, they were retired—until Tanya Sandefur saw potential in them and purchased four at auction for just over $10,000.

Tanya’s dream was to create a unique courtyard using the railcars, turning them into a vibrant hub. Alongside her husband, she began renovations in 1995, transforming the cars into commercial spaces and a lodging site affectionately called “The Train Wreck.” Within three months, they had converted the old troop carriers into a deli, bike shop, rental units, and Whistle Stop Lodging, becoming a quirky local landmark.

In 2024 “The Train Wreck” closed its doors for good. The railcars were sold and scattered. We were able to purchase train car #35 and moved to Cherrywood Lane.

Now under renovation, railcar #35 is being transformed into a stylish vacation rental, set to open in May 2025. Its story, from military transport to hospitality icon, reflects Alaskan creativity and the enduring charm of giving old things new purpose. This was a piece of Alaskan history waiting for a second life.
